"FRET (Förster Resonance Energy Transfer) microscopy imaging is a widely used technique to determine protein interactions inside living cells. It can answer several questions about the extent of protein colocalization, dimerization, folding, molecular motors, and transduction pathways. FRET is a quantum mechanical process involving the radiation-less transfer of energy between fluorophores over a small distance (1-10 nm). If the molecules are close enough, the donor fluorophore transfers its energy to the acceptor fluorophore. Monitoring the ratio of the fluorophore emissions provides valuable information to researchers about the spatial localization of the proteins being studied.
EXFO's customers have found that using the X-Cite® exacte system reduces the need to normalize the ratio of the fluorescence signals. The X-Cite® exacte provides illumination that is more stable than the traditional fluorescence arc-lamp and offers greater control over variables that cause undesirable artifacts in a FRET set up. Researchers can modulate the light output to optimize imaging conditions and minimize photobleaching, while having a stable light source for imaging over long periods of time (10-24 hours time-lapse FRET experiments)."

X-Cite® XR2100 and XP750: measuring illuminating power where it truly matters – at the objective plane.
QUEBEC CITY, CANADA, October 16, 2009 - EXFO Inc.'s Life Sciences and Industrial Division (NASDAQ: EXFO, TSX: EXF) introduces its newest innovation, the X-Cite® XR2100 Power Meter and the XP750 Objective Plane Power Sensor for fluorescence microscopy applications. The new XR2100 and XP750 allow researchers to measure the optical power at the specimen level, enabling consistent and repeatable illumination throughout their experiments.
With its sleek low profile, designed specifically to fit on the microscope stage, the XP750 offers the versatility of measuring output from an X-Cite® illuminator or any other epi-fluorescence light source, including HBO/mercury, metal halide or xenon lamps, lasers and Light Emitting Diodes. The XP750 performs effectively with a wide range of applications and microscope configurations with power sensitivity at levels from 5μW to 500mW at wavelengths between 320nm and 750nm.
"The XP750 is destined to become an important staple in the toolbox of every investigator who is doing quantitative work that demands absolute repeatability in terms of excitation output," stated Michael W. Davidson, National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Florida State University. "This unit is far superior to standard power meters because it fits perfectly into a slide holder and positions the light sensor at the objective focal plane."
Featuring a control keypad interface, the XR2100 allows power measurements to easily be stored to the unit itself or downloaded directly into exportable data files via a computer. By offering a convenient way to manage settings and data from a desktop, researchers can maintain exportable data files together with imaging data to provide complete experiment records that facilitate compliance with Good Laboratory Practices.
"With the new X-Cite® XR2100 and XP750, researchers have access to an intuitive and powerful measurement system that enables them to achieve repeatability and efficiency throughout their research experiments," said Allan Firhoj, Vice President and General Manager of EXFO’s Life Sciences and Industrial Division. "By combining innovation, functionality and ease of use in our products, EXFO continues to demonstrate its ingenuity and leadership in delivering advanced technology."

» Setting a new standard for stability, control and repeatability
QUEBEC CITY, CANADA, March 13, 2008 - EXFO Inc.'s Life Sciences & Industrial Division (NASDAQ: EXFO, TSX: EXF) announced today the expansion of its X-Cite® Fluorescence Microscopy Illumination System product line with the launch of the new X-Cite® exacte.
The X-Cite® exacte is designed for demanding imaging applications such as live cell, high speed and quantitative imaging, all of which require illumination stability and precise repeatability. Controlling illumination variability allows researchers to significantly improve productivity by reducing or even eliminating time-consuming image processing steps to normalize data.
The X-Cite® exacte provides ultra-stable illumination by employing a DC-powered lamp coupled with EXFO's patented Closed-Loop Feedback technology. In addition, light output can be calibrated in absolute power units using the external X-Cite® Radiometer. This allows repeatable experiments whether they are performed over several weeks or around the world in different laboratories.
With the X-Cite® exacte's high-speed internal shutter, intensity adjustment in increments as small as 1%, computer programmability and a graphical user interface that records real-time stability data, EXFO once again sets a new standard for fluorescence illuminators.
"The original X-Cite® was a huge success as it was the first illuminator of its kind with innovative features such as the convenience of pre-aligned, long-life lamps and superior illumination uniformity," said Allan Firhøj, Vice-President and General Manager of EXFO's Life Sciences & Industrial Division. "The X-Cite® exacte is another major industry-first, giving researchers an unprecedented level of stability and control of intensity. By making it easier to design and perform repeatable experiments, researchers can obtain accurate results more efficiently, and arrive at conclusions faster."
"Our work relies on accurate quantitative measurements of fluorescence intensities in cells over the duration of an experiment which can be a few hours or multiple weeks," said Damir Sudar, staff scientist from the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in Berkeley, CA. "The X-Cite® exacte provides both short-term stability with the Closed-Loop Feedback, and long-term stability with the calibrated light output feature. The X-Cite® exacte has greatly enhanced our capability to do quantitative fluorescence imaging work."

Lamp life up to 10 times longer than conventional illumination systems
QUEBEC CITY, CANADA, April 18, 2006-EXFO's Life Sciences and Industrial Division (NASDAQ: EXFO, TSE: EXF.SV) announced today the release of the new X-Cite® 120XL Fluorescence Illumination System for microscope manufacturers.
The next-generation X-Cite 120XL system, replacing the highly successful X-Cite 120, delivers excellent image quality and at least 2000 hours of lamp life, which is over 60% longer than the previous model and up to 10 times longer than conventional illumination systems.
The X-Cite 120XL, which operates much more quietly than the previous X-Cite 120 for an improved work environment, is a self-contained illumination unit separate from a microscope. A simple light guide attachment through custom-coupling optics ensures a uniform field of view with no heat from the lamp being transferred to the sample. The output intensity of the X-Cite 120XL system can also be adjusted from the optional front-panel control.
The X-Cite 120XL is pre-aligned to make changing lamps a fast and simple one-step process. It uses a 120-watt lamp to deliver rich spectral excitation with a more uniform field of view than conventional fluorescence illumination systems. With each lamp now lasting over 2000 hours, customers will save even more time and money with significantly fewer lamp replacements.
"We have taken our very successful X-Cite 120 Fluorescence Illumination System and made substantial improvements based on feedback from our customers," said Allan Firhoj, Vice-President and General Manager of EXFO's Life Sciences and Industrial Division. "With more than 2000 hours of life from our pre-aligned lamp, uniform output and optional intensity control, the X-Cite 120XL system provides researchers with ease of operation, great value, and exceptional image quality that provides highly repeatable results. Once again, we have diligently listened to our customers and evolved this market leading system, so that the overall benefit to our customers increased substantially for the next generation of X-Cite."
